Wordle, the Queen, and Euphoria all ranked well in Google’s report of 2022’s Most-Searched Style, which was released today. However, it was the fashion-related queries that caught our attention. The top 10 most-Googled things in the fashion industry are all basics that everyone needs, like Mom jeans and Chelsea boots.
Oversized shirts, which are likely the most frequently seen item in the Vogue offices, topped the list of most-searched terms. Although button-down Oxford shirts have been in fashion for decades, the last year has seen a meteoric rise in their appeal, thanks in large part to their boxier cut and subsequent cult status. Frankie Shop’s cotton-poplin shirt, available in a range of colors including grass green, blue, orange, and stripes, is one of the brands responsible for this rise in popularity. It’s not expected to lose steam in the following year, though, seeing as how checked oversized shirts were a focal point of Bottega Veneta’s spring summer 2023 collection.
The fact that it may be worn over a bikini in the summer or a thick blanket scarf and wide-leg trousers in the winter is likely a contributing factor to its success. Though there are countless ways to wear an oversized shirt, our editors consistently reach for the same formula. All these timeless pieces made it onto the most-searched list, so we’re officially crowning this ensemble the 2022 uniform. It’s not as attention-grabbing as, say, Rihanna’s maternity wear or Timothée Chalamet’s red backless halter top by Haider Ackermann, but it’s a reliable combination that can be worn year-round.
