An exhibit at Sacramento State is bringing awareness to the struggles of modern Iranian women through art, history, poetry and fashion.”The Seen Iranian Woman” is a work of art weaved through clothes, representing the adversity and pain of the last hundred years regarding what women in Iran are allowed to wear.The messages coming out of Iran have been focused on Women, Life, Freedom — a movement supported around the world.Thursday marked a special commemoration of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini’s death on Sept. 16, 2022, who died in the custody of morality police in Iran. “In the Iranian culture, the 40th day after somebody passes away is the day that their family and friends come together and have a memorial day for them, and today is the one-year anniversary of that 40-day mark for Mahsa Amini,” said Jalehn Naasz, curator of the exhibition.An Iranian immigrant herself and instructor in the Fashion Merchandising and Management department at the university, Naasz custom-made a few dresses to illustrate fashion and mourn the countless lives that have been lost since protests erupted worldwide.”The leaves were falling quietly and it looked like they were falling before they were ready to fall and it just reminded me of the youth and the people in Iran whose lives were just quietly being eliminated,” she added about a dress made with leaves and the names of victims.Poetry books, school uniforms, artwork from Sac State students and Iranian students, and donated garments and textiles by alumni are part of the exhibition.The gallery, located at Sac State’s University Union, is open Monday – Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and the closing reception is on November 16th.
